12 Days of Holiday Decorating Ideas Day 7

#7, Here is another unique wreath idea that I just Love! find a wreath form from your local arts and crafts store, and hot glue acorns to it. In this photo, the acorns were spray painted white. When doing this type of project, think of items that can be purchased in bulk for not a lot of money: peppermint candies, shelled nuts, beads, old jewelery, etc.. and glue them on a form, makes for a one-of-a kind piece. If you don't own a glue gun, run right out and get one today!'

#4, here is a cool centerpiece idea. Most of us have one of these inexpensive dressing mirrors hanging on our wall, if not you can find them at any discount store, look for one with a decorative frame. Holiday decorating tip #3, check out this cool Popsicle stick wreath! How easy to make, just purchase some medium gauge wire from your local home improvement store, make two rings, one small, one large, then glue down the Popsicle sticks in a random pattern. Start with sticks that are connecting the rings so the wreath is stable. A great simple, modern, eclectic piece.

The 12 Days of Holiday Decorating Tips Day 1

Over the next two weeks I will share with you "The 12 Days of Holiday Decorating Tips" Simple arrangements you can pull together with what you have around the house. What are some of your favorite holiday decorating tips?

#1 is one of my favorites because we all have glass vessels of some kind in our house. You can use a vase, bowl, apothecary jar; any type glass vessel. If you don't have one, you can find inexpensive options at discount stores, Michaels, even the Dollar Store. Fill your vessels with round holiday ornaments, either ones that you already own, or again, find these at your favorite discount stores. It is best to group small ones together, or use one large one as a statement piece. You can choose a color theme as illustrated below and really give your home a jolt of color for the holidays. You can use these all over your home; as center pieces, on the bathroom vanity, on the fireplace mantle, just about any flat surface. Give it a try and send in your pic!

Shop small local business

Tonight, my last tip for shopping local; New and Used Furniture and Decor. Shopping new, used, antique and vintage, is key to pulling together an affordable well designed space. My favorite new and used spots are: Harbor Home Consignments in Gig Harbor, Hidden Treasures in Tacoma, and Hope Furnishings in Tacoma.

Harbor Home has excellent quality designer items at a fraction of the price. Hidden Treasures is a gold mine of as-found vintage and used home furnishings. Hope Furnishings offers both new and used furniture, many of their new items are donated from Big Name retailers. And of course, it would not be a complete new and used category, without giving a shout out for More Decor!

Below is a room I am working on with a client made up of items from some of these local shops. What are some of your favorite new or used furniture and decor spots? Have fun shopping this weekend, and have fabulous holiday!

Living Room and Kitchen Staging Photos

Staging Project of the Week!

I was so excited to work with Realtor Stephen Janho and his client to stage this beautiful Renton home. My goal was to capture the classic and timeless essence of the home, and to highlight the large living space as a warm and inviting space for the family to hangout and entertain. In the kitchen, I accentuated the eat-in features with a breakfast table and chairs, and highlighted the large amount of counter space and storage with a few choice items.

Want to know a quick inexpensive way to add instant value to your kitchen? Change out the hardware. Before, this kitchen had dated brass handles on the cabinetry; I suggested to the homeowner to change them out with an oil rubbed bronze finish to match the updated traditional look of the home, instant equity!

Specialty shops are great for focusing you on a particular style or selection, and have staff that can help you find that particular item you are looking for. Marinus Home offers the best selection of nautical furnishings I have seen at fantastic prices. Poppy & Co. has one of the best selections of refurbished vintage items and decor I have experienced. And Earthwise has an awesome selection of architectural salvage; everything from building materials to decor.

Fireplace makeover completed

For the past few months I have been working with some fabulous clients on the infamous cinder-block fireplace and basement den; the room is now complete and is the perfect oasis for the family!

The clients wanted a warm and cozy space that was still light and bright. We achieved that through the color palette, furnishings, and fireplace treatment. The before photos on top look cold and uninviting, while you can just feel the warmth exuding from the after photos below. A successful Redesign is accomplished through a detailed design plan that I provide, and design implementation and styling that the client chooses to have me do. It also incorporates some of the client's current furnishings, making it a very budget friendly design solution, that is a collaborative and fun process!

Fall decorating ideas

Another easy, budget friendly tip is to decorate with produce. I love using the various squash and pumpkins that are available this time of year; and the best part, once you are done with them, you can cook with them! In this center piece, the produce is accented with other natural elements, pinecones, walnuts, and magnolia leaves.

Fall Decorating

Continuing with our Fall Decorating theme; this is a great time to ad some layers. Adding layers to your home creates depth, dimension, and warmth; use different textures too! In this example, the nubby throw blanket is on a leather chair with a faux fur pillow. Here is an extra tip; fur pillows are inexpensive and easy to make, just go to your favorite fabric store and pick up some faux fur, make a cover for an existing pillow that you already own-instant fall!

Fall is in the Air

Fall is here! And it is a great time to retreat indoors and focus on making our homes warm and inviting. As a designer that focuses on maximizing what you already own and brining in budget friendly touches, my favorite fall decorating tips use nature, homemade items, and pieces you can find at great prices. This week I will share some of my favorite tips with you. If you decide to use one of my ideas or have one of your own, please share with us - You can win a Starbuck's gift card!

First up, brining the outdoors in, this tip requires practically no budget! Fill vases with branches and place throughout your home, this is also great in guest room to welcome your friends and family. Take your family on a roundtrip to the countryside, or better yet, go out into your own back yard and utilize what nature provides to us! Dried branches last forever, and fresh ones will last months in water.

Redesigning spaces on a budget

One of my favorite tips that I use when redesigning spaces on a budget, is to layer area rugs. Many of us have an area rug that we love that is too small; there is no need to part with, you can give it new life and save funds by layering it over a larger rug. For this purpose I recommend a flat woven jute, cotton, or sisal rug. Rugs of this material are very affordable in larger sizes, are durable, and are neutral enough to showcase your more colorful or patterned rug as shown below. Give it a try!

Selecting an area rug

Selecting an area rug for a bedroom can be a daunting task. You want to consider the size, texture, and type of mood you want to create. Below, I selected a photo of a bedroom done in a neutral palette. In the original photo, a sisal rug is used to add texture; however, a sisal rug is not as soft as a wool rug, so if you walk around bare foot, you may not want sisal or jute. I included other examples of rugs that would also look great in the space, a graphic gray and ivory patterned rug with a thick wool pile, and colorful tribal rug with a lower profile. Any one of these would work; it just depends on what mood you want to create. And lastly, selecting the right size is important. If you have a small room, you could use a runner at the foot or sides of the bed, a medium size room would need an 8x10 or 9X12 to frame the bed, and a larger room would need rugs of various sizes scattered throughout.

Selecting the right Area Rug

This week's Daily Dose is about selecting the right Area Rug. There are no hard and fast rules about color, it is more about selecting the right size, weight, and dimension for your space.

Tonight, I want to address the most common question I get; "Can I put and area rug on top of carpet?" The answer is "YES". In fact, I encourage it if you have plain, low pile wall to wall carpeting. In this example, you can see how the texture and pattern of this rug fills the vast flatness of the wall to wall carpet and adds much needed dimension. When you place an area rug over carpet, you just want to make sure it is thick and heavy so that it lays flat and stands up to activity; also, add a rug pad specifically for between area rugs and carpets, this will help extend the life of both your area rug and carpet.

How to attach wallpaper to a fireplace

Today I wallpapered the fireplace in a charcoal gray textured paper. I wanted to use a paper with vertical stripes to give the allusion of more height and a taller ceiling. In addition, the texture adds warmth as we are not able to hang drapes. This particular paper is hung by sizing the drywall first, then when dry, spreading paste directly to the wall. This technique allows for easy shifting of the paper to ensure it is level. To try this at home, look for "paste the wall" wallpaper, I ordered this style from, Graham and Brown they have many colors and textures to choose from. Up next, tile!

Fire Place Makeover Day 1

This week is the start of the fireplace makeover I am working on with Downing's Custom Construction. The client requested a warmer, cozier environment for their basement/den; the main factor to giving them that is a fireplace face lift. As you can see, their fireplace is covered with floor to ceiling cinder block. My recommendation was to get out of "jail" and warm it up with a new facade. What we chose to do was level out the cinder block, add tile around the firebox, them use textured wall paper on the fireplace surround to add warmth, dimension, and height to the room(more on that later). The photo below represents Day 1, adding the facade made from a mixture of drywall mud and glue. Up next, the wallpaper; stay tuned!

Daily Dose: Budget Friendly Kitchen Updates

This week's "Daily Dose" is about simple and budget friendly kitchen updates. I am a fan of adding high style custom looks to builder-grade features, one way to do this is to add open shelving in a kitchen. Open shelving can be purchased anywhere and at any price point. I like to take out a cabinet next to a window, stove, or at the end of the row, and replace the space with open shelving. This is a great place to display your large platters, stoneware, a bowl of fruit, books, or a basket of spices. P.S. notice how the tray is used on the countertop to contain loose items - taken from last week's DD

Daily Dose: How to keep your coffe table clutter free

When you have a lot of drama going on in the room, it is best to keep your coffee table styling simple. In this example, the simple vase with flowers, stack of books, and candle, ad just the right accent without overpowering the space. Also notice how the pink flowers give that pop of accent color against the green and blue. You can use that same trick with other objects as well.
