Fire Place Makeover Day 1

This week is the start of the fireplace makeover I am working on with Downing's Custom Construction. The client requested a warmer, cozier environment for their basement/den; the main factor to giving them that is a fireplace face lift. As you can see, their fireplace is covered with floor to ceiling cinder block. My recommendation was to get out of "jail" and warm it up with a new facade. What we chose to do was level out the cinder block, add tile around the firebox, them use textured wall paper on the fireplace surround to add warmth, dimension, and height to the room(more on that later). The photo below represents Day 1, adding the facade made from a mixture of drywall mud and glue. Up next, the wallpaper; stay tuned!

Free up space in you kitchen

If you struggle with limited cabinet space, free up a significant amount by making and installing your own pot rack. Easily construct a pot rack using a piece of timber and large hooks from the hardware store. Hang on an empty wall or above the range. Looks great and saves space!

How to use fabric in the kitchen

Use fabric in your kitchen to add a simple stylish update that coordinates with the rest of your home. Reupholster your bar stools, customize a lampshade, and make a window valance. These projects only require two or three yards of fabric and make a large impact. The fabric brings extra warmth and texture to a space mostly filled with hard surfaces.

Daily Dose: Budget Friendly Kitchen Updates

This week's "Daily Dose" is about simple and budget friendly kitchen updates. I am a fan of adding high style custom looks to builder-grade features, one way to do this is to add open shelving in a kitchen. Open shelving can be purchased anywhere and at any price point. I like to take out a cabinet next to a window, stove, or at the end of the row, and replace the space with open shelving. This is a great place to display your large platters, stoneware, a bowl of fruit, books, or a basket of spices. P.S. notice how the tray is used on the countertop to contain loose items - taken from last week's DD

Daily Dose: How to keep your coffe table clutter free

When you have a lot of drama going on in the room, it is best to keep your coffee table styling simple. In this example, the simple vase with flowers, stack of books, and candle, ad just the right accent without overpowering the space. Also notice how the pink flowers give that pop of accent color against the green and blue. You can use that same trick with other objects as well.

styling your coffee table

You probably thought I forgot the "Daily Dose" this week; Not at all, here we go! I wanted to focus this week on styling your coffee table. It is a flat surface in our home that is easily cluttered. Make it a special place that contains... some of the items you love the most and your every day necessities. This example is for you "maximalists" out there. Those of you that like to have all of your stuff around you Trays and bowls are great for containing just about anything, using a tray gives the illusion that all of your "stuff" is contained neatly. Use items of varying heights, shapes and textures; need to raise something higher? A coffee table book or two do the trick and add that extra layer of color and dimension.

Nail head detail is a classic look that is very popular in home furnishings right now. Instead of going out and buying a brand new piece, you can actually add nail head detail yourself. You can purchase the nail heads from any fabric store they come in a variety of finishes, silver, gold, bronze, etc.. The picture below shows a simple white chest that was embellished with nail heads in an interesting design. Give it a try and send in your photo!
